The position of lieutenant governor of Ohio was established in 1852. The lieutenant governor is elevated to the position of governor if the governor resigns, dies in office or is removed by impeachment. Before then, the president of the Ohio State Senate would serve as acting governor if a vacancy in the governorship occurred. Until relatively recently, the election for lieutenant governor occurred separately from that of the governor, though concurrently. Thus, there were several instances in which the lieutenant governor was from a differenat party than the governor. This was changed in the 1970s. Richard F. Celeste was the last lieutenant governor to be elected separately (1974). In 1978, George Voinovich bcame the first lieutenant governor to be elected on the same ticket with the governor. From 1851 to 1979, the lieutenant governor also served as the president of the Ohio State Senate, the nominal presiding officer of that legislative house. 1852 was a leap year starting on Thursday (see link for calendar). ...
