| In ligature strangulations the ligature mark normally proceeds at or below the height of the larynx, where as in hanging cases the ligature mark would be observed above the larynx. |
| However this distinction is not always reliable, as if the hanging ligature has a slip knot, the rope will tighten on the neck and fail to leave a missing section in the mark, being present through 360 degrees round the circumference of the neck, as often seen in strangulation. |
