In boxing, the light heavyweight division is the weight division between cruiserweight over 175 pounds (79.4 kg) and super middleweight, 168 lb (76.4 kg). Throughout history this division's fighters have been overshadowed by the two more glamorous divisions it is sandwiched between. Nevertheless, the light heavyweight class has produced some of boxing's greatest champions; Billy Conn, Archie Moore, Joey Maxim, Michael Spinks Bob Foster, and Roy Jones Jr.-to name a few. Many light heavyweight champions unsuccessfully challenged for the heavyweight crown until Michael Spinks became the first reigning light heavyweight champion to win the heavyweight championship. Interestingly, Bob Fitzsimmons captured the light heavyweight championship after losing his heavyweight championship. Two all time great Heavyweight Champions Ezzard Charles and Floyd Patterson started out as light heavyweights, Charles defeating Archie Moore and Joey Maxim several times in non-title bouts before becoming heavyweight champion, and Patterson losing to Joey Maxim (though some thought Patterson should have won the fight) before becoming heavyweight champion himself. Heavyweight is a division, or weight class, in boxing.
In 1920, the minimum weight for a heavyweight was set at 175 pounds (79 kg), which today is the light heavyweight division maximum.
The first heavyweight champion under the Marquess of Queensberry rules was the immensely popular John L. Sullivan, known as "The Boston Strong Boy." He weighed around 200 pounds (91 kg) when in shape and was a bare-knuckle champion.
WWF Light Heavyweight Championship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (428 words)
The WWF Light Heavyweight Championship is a retired professional wrestling championship, formerly competed for in the World Wrestling Federation by wrestlers billed as weighing less than 220 lb (100 kg).
The WWF first began to used the Light Heavyweight Championship in Japanese and Mexican promotions they had good connections with, though the title was only recognized as an official WWF title in 1997 when a tournament was held on American soil to crown a champion.
X-Pac did not return to WWF television until the spring of 2002 when he joined the nWo, and given the lack of a Light Heavyweight Title belt around his waist, and the lack of an official unification match, it is assumed that the Light Heavyweight Title was simply abandoned.
