Bombardier CX-100 Cars

Operating on the Bukit Panjang Light Rapid Transit since 1999, these are the first LRT vehicles to be seen in Singapore (Though similar vehicles were used on the Changi Airport Skytrain system much earlier). Most of the new features available in newer MRT train cars are found here too. An interesting feature of such cars is that the windows get tinted whenever the train cars move nearer to apartment blocks alongside the track. This is to ensure that residents in these apartment blocks have their privacy. One thing to note is that these LRT cars are the first vehicles in Singapore to be driverless, also meaning that kids are able to sit upfront in the driver's cab (if there were any) and pretend to drive the train. 19 individual cars (which can be coupled in pairs if demand necessitates for that during peak hours) were purchased. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Crystal Mover Cars

Operating on the Sengkang Light Rapid Transit & the Punggol Light Rapid Transit since 2002 and 2005 respectively, these train cars once again contain all the features that the Bombardier LRT vehicles have. However, they sport a much more futuristic design (as required by the Land Transport Authority) to complement the futuristic new towns of Sengkang & Punggol. 41 cars were purchased in total for the Sengkang & Punggol LRTs. Unlike their Bombardier counterparts, these cars cannot be coupled in pairs as the design of the Sengkang & Punggol LRTs does not allow for that. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd (三菱重工業: MHI) is a Japanese company. ...

A near identical version of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Crystal Mover Cars will be used for the new Changi Airport Skytrain to replace their older Bombardier counterparts, which is currently under construction.

History

Early Conception

The concept of having rail lines which could bring people from door to door without requiring the use of road-clogging buses was much favoured by the government transport planners, especially with the increased emphasis on a rail-based public transport network. For intra town travel, LRTs were favoured over buses as

  • train arrival & departure times are almost guaranteed as trains run on dedicated elevated guideways (no traffic congestion, no traffic lights)
  • no air pollution generated as the trains are electrically powered
  • do not add to road traffic.

Rapid transit - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography (4201 words)
A rapid transit, underground, subway, elevated, or metro system is a railway system, usually in an urban area, with a high capacity and frequency of service, and grade separation from other traffic.
The terms "rapid transit" or "metro" tend to view this as a less important characteristic and include systems that are entirely elevated or at ground level (at grade).
Before any plans were made for transit systems with underground tunnels and stations, several railway operators built tunnels for their trains, usually to reduce the grade of the railway line.
