Encyclopedia > Likelike Highway

Hawaii State Highway 63, generally known as the Likelike Highway, is one of three main highways passing through the Ko'olau Mountains on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The highway passes through the Wilson Tunnel, and takes commuters from the town of Kaneohe on the windward (east, north-east) side of the island, through Kalihi Valley to the state's capital city of Honolulu on the leeward (south) side of the island. The other highways are the Pali Highway and Interstate H-3.

Likelike Highway (pronounced LEE-keh-LEE-keh) is named for Hawaiian Princess Miriam Likelike, sister of King David Kalakaua.

In the mid-1990’s, Kahekili Highway was widened to six lanes from Likelike Highway to Kahuhipa Street, and to five lanes from Kahuhipa Street to Haiku Road.
Highway improvements should be limited to minor additions of turn lanes or stacking lanes, enhancements of landscaping and pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and traffic control features that improve safety and traffic flow and the aesthetic appearance of the right-of-way.
Park-and-ride lots are most likely to be located alongside a trans-Koolau highway and mauka of most residential neighborhoods so that commuters do not have to “double-back” their route to board the express bus.
