His professional career started at the rather late age of 20, starting at the club Saint-Seurin in which he scored 10 goals in his 33 appearances for the club. Sunderland Disaster

Arriving in the June of 2001, Peter Reid found a replacement for the ageing Niall Quinn. Lots of media hype was around the lanky frenchman, as the club forked out £3.5m for his signature, but when he got onto the pitch, it was dreadful. He made his first two starts against Ipswich Town and Fulham, he was replaced in both of them, Lilian could not ajust to the fast pace of the Premiership like his manager had hoped. After 12 disastrous games with no goals avail, Peter Reid decided to cut his losses. Lilian was quickly shipped off in January of 2002 to German side FC Cologne after a fee of £2.5m was agreed by his employers. Career Recovery

After his disaster at Sunderland, Lilian was shipped on loan to FC Cologne and then signed for them for a fee of £2.5m, he only made 5 appearances for the club, before being loaned out to Bastia (8 goals, 30 appearances) and then moving on a free from FC Cologne to Nice (10 goals in 33 appearances) - both Bastia and Nice are clubs who wanted him in his nightmare season at Sunderland.
