A limited-access highway is a highway where access is limited. Much of the time, driveways to adjacent private land can be eliminated with a side road for access. History

The concept of (deliberately) limited-access highways started back during the parkway system in the state of New York back in c. 1910. They eliminated private access on parkways because if there was, delivery trucks would be unable to send goods to those places hence the concept. After a while, the concept of LAH's evolved into the so-called "uninterrupted highways" which are commonly known as freeways, but can be called expressways according to the vincinity's nomenclature.
