Lincoln County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 24,131. Its county seat is Canton6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,499 km˛ (579 mi˛). 1,497 km˛ (578 mi˛) of it is land and 1 km˛ (0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

The county is divided into sixteen townships: Brooklyn, Canton, Dayton, Delapre, Delaware, Eden, Grant, Fairview, Highland, La Valley, Lincoln, Lynn, Norway, Perry, Pleasant, Springdale.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,131 people, 8,782 households, and 6,665 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km˛ (42/mi˛). There are 9,131 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.55% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,782 households out of which 41.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.50% are married couples living together, 6.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.10% are non-families. 19.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.14.


In the county, the population is spread out with 29.70% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 31.90% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males.
