Linn County (standard abbreviation: LN) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 9,570. Its county seat is Mound City, Kansas6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,570 km˛ (606 mi˛). 1,551 km˛ (599 mi˛) of it is land and 20 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.26% water.

Demographics

As of the census˛ of 2000, there are 9,570 people, 3,807 households, and 2,748 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). There are 4,720 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.50% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,807 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.70% are married couples living together, 6.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.94.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 25.70% from 45 to 64, and 18.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 100.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $35,906, and the median income for a family is $42,571. Males have a median income of $31,720 versus $22,287 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,009. 11.00% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.20% of those under the age of 18 and 9.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
