Lion Island is in the Hawkesbury River just inside the entrance to Broken Bay. Originally the island was called Mount Elliot Island and appeared by this name on maps of Kuring-gai Chase up to the 1920's (ref: National Library of Australia nla.map-rm3117-sl-e). It is located in the Gosford local government area[1]. Lion Island gains its name from a supposed resemblance to a Sphinx, a mythical Lion[2].
