Encyclopedia > Lipolysis

Lipolysis is the breakdown of fat stored in fat cells. During this process, free fatty acids are released into the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. Ketones are produced, leading to the process of ketosis. Testing strips are available which can sometimes measure whether or not this process is taking place. In chemistry, especially biochemistry, a fatty acid is a carboxylic acid (or organic acid), often with a long aliphatic tail (long chains), either saturated or unsaturated. ... A ketone is either the functional group characterized by a carbonyl group linked to two other carbon atoms or a compound that contains this functional group. ... Ketosis (key-toe-sis) is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen and switches to a fasting mode such as occurs during sleep, during dieting, and during the bodys response to starvation. ...

Switch from PI to Abacavir: affect on fat, glucose (3569 words)
The different components of glucose metabolism and lipolysis were evaluated by hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp both before and 96 wk after the replacement of the PIs in their regimen by the NRTI abacavir.
The trend for lipolysis to normalize after PI withdrawal occurred independent of any changes in concentrations of plasma insulin, a potent inhibitor of lipolysis, epinephrine and cortisol, both potent stimulators of lipolysis, and fat distribution.
An explanation for the decrease in lipolysis might be a lowered tonus of the sympathetic nervous system (tonus: the normal state of a healthy muscle when resting in a state of slight contraction).
WEIGHT LOSS, DESCRIPTION of a LIPOLYSIS-TREATMENT, difference with LIPOSUCTION (590 words)
A credit of a Lipolysis treatment is that it pinpoints at the spot where the skin indicates inactive adipose cells.
Electro lipolysis employs quite small electric currents, being brought into the cell tissue first by means of very thin long needles, in a later phase via pads that stick onto the skin.
Lipolysis can also be applied in a cosmetic studio, when weight reduction is not wanted but a figure correction is required.
