Encyclopedia > List of AMD Opteron microprocessors

Opteron is the name of a family of CPUs within the AMD64 line, designed by AMD for the server market. The AMD Opteron (codenamed SledgeHammer during development) was the first of AMDs eighth-generation x86 processors based on the K8 or Hammer core, and the first processor to implement the AMD64 (formerly x86-64) instruction set architecture. ... AMD64 Logo AMD64 (also x86-64 or x64) is a 64-bit microprocessor architecture and corresponding instruction set designed by Advanced Micro Devices. ... Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. ...

For Socket 940 and Socket 939 Opterons, each chip has a three-digit model number, in the form "Opteron XYY". For Socket F and Socket AM2 Opterons, each chip has a four-digit model number, in the form "Opteron XZYY". For all Opterons, the first digit (the X) specifies the number of CPUs on the target machine:

For Socket F and Socket AM2 Opterons, the second digit (the Z) identifies the memory type: presently, only 2 (for DDR2) is used.

For all Opterons, the last two digits in the model number (the YY) give an indication of the speed of the CPU. For Socket 940 and Socket 939 models, values of YY numbered 60 or higher indicate dual-core models. Since all Socket F and Socket AM2 models are dual-core, such distinction is not present.

The suffix HE or EE indicates a high-efficiency/energy-efficiency version of the CPU that utilizes a lower input voltage. The suffix SE indicates a top-of-the-line model that utilizes a higher input voltage than normal models in the range.
