The Walsh family move to Beverly Hills from Minnesota, due to father Jim's job transfer. Talk about a culture shock...twins Brandon and Brenda attend West Beverly high, and priorities are different here than in farm country. Brandon meets the school newspaper editor, Andrea, a hard-nosed, go-getter, with a bit of a secret. He also befriends Steve, a spoiled rich kid. Brenda makes friends with Kelly and Donna, and tries to fit in, as David Silver and Scott roam the halls as freshmen.

Distraught over their living arrangement, Toby attempts to spite and annoy his new step-sister Ashley, who he just moved in with. He convinces his best friend J.T. to run a 'joke' campaign against her for the school president candidacy. Meanwhile, Manny and Emma face bullying on their first day of school at the hand of the grade eights.
Paige convinces Terri to get drunk before the school dance because Paige is jealous of the crush Spinner and Terri have on each other. JT and Toby get caught looking at pornography on the Internet by Toby's parents. Emma introduces herself to the new and misunderstood kid, Sean Cameron, by asking him to dance.
It's Parents' Day at Degrassi and everybody is anxious and nervous of the impending event, but not more than Toby. He is embarrassed about his parents coming to parents' day due to their constant fighting. Paige and Ashley compete for the attention of Toby's mom, an acting agent.
Ashley and Jimmy want to take their relationship to the next step, but they decide that they are not ready. Meanwhile, Toby develops a crush on Emma. He is heartbroken when she shows no signs of feeling the same way about him and when it becomes obvious that she has feelings for Sean.
Jimmy is struggling to balance basketball and his schoolwork, but he will do anything to get on the basketball team, even take Ritalin from Spinner to improve his performance. Liberty wants to be on the video announcements, much to Ashley's dismay. Spinner moons the crowd during a basketball game.
Jimmy turns 14 and Ashley grows a bit tired of their relationship. Emma gets her period for the first time. She is unprepared, but thanks to the help of Manny and Paige, Emma makes it through.
Liberty is distraught after Emma indirectly starts a fast-spreading rumor about an inappropriate relationship between Liberty and a teacher. Spinner finds a bug in his food, so he becomes determined to prove that the cafeteria is infested. He brings in his own bugs and gets in trouble.
Manny has been waiting for cheerleading to start, then Paige and Hazel start to take an interest in Manny, and Emma hates what Manny becomes. Also JT, Toby, Liberty, and Spinner are ready to cash in their money.
Terri and Paige want to perform a new upbeat, pop version of Ashley's song. Ashley hates it because she thinks that the bubble-gum sound takes away from the substance and depth of it. Toby, in an attempt to win Emma's affection, decides to perform in the talent show with her.
Jimmy and Sean decide to fight after school, resulting in Sean pushing Emma to the ground, a reflex that ruined their relationship. Spinner tries to get sick so he doesn't have to take his English exam.
Ashley and Toby are having a few friends over for an end-of-the-year party. Toby and JT enlist the help of Sean on being bad boys and JT decides to take some ecstasy that he got from his cousin. Ashley secretly takes it. She then hooks up with Sean, brags about it in Jimmy's face, and insults Paige.
