It includes shire counties, metropolitan counties and unitary authorities. A shire county or non-metropolitan county in England, is a county level entity which is not a metropolitan county. ... The metropolitan counties of England are counties that cover large urban areas, each with several metropolitan districts. ... A unitary authority is a term used in a two-tier local government system to describe a unit of local government that operates as a single tier. ...


In cases where a unitary authority has been detached from a county the highest point of the unitary authority is shown separately. For example, Luton is shown separately from Bedfordshire.
