Midway through the game, Bahamut, King of the Dragons of Cardia, rewards the Light Warriors for proving their courage after delivering the Tail found in the Castle of Ordeal. He transforms the Warriors as follows:

• Fighter becomes Knight
• Thief becomes Ninja
• Black Belt becomes Master
• Red Mage becomes Red Wizard
• White Mage becomes White Wizard
• Black Mage becomes Black Wizard

With this transformation the Light Warriors gain the ability to learn new spells and use different weapons and armour.

Lich, the Earth Fiend, is found in the Earth Cave. To reach him the Light Warriors must enter the Earth Cave twice. During the first trip, the Warriors defeat the Vampire (HP of 156) and obtain the Ruby. The Ruby is fed to the Titan blocking the passage through Titan's Tunnel to Sarda's (Sadda's) Cave. Sarda (Sadda) gives the Light Warriors the Rod to lift the Stone Plate blocking the way to Lich. Lich later appears again in the Chaos Shrine as a boss. Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990 lists his HP as 400. The first time the party battles him in the GBA version, his HP is listed as 1200. Marlith, the Fire Fiend, also called Kary, resides in Gurgu Volcano. She can only be reached using the Canoe, received by the Light Warriors from the Twelve Sages of Crescent Lake. Marilith later appears again in the Chaos Shrine as a boss. Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990, lists her HP as 600. The first time the party battles her in the GBA version, her HP is listed as 1440. The second time the party battles her in the GBA version, her HP is listed as 3200.

Kraken, the Water Fiend, resides in the lowest level of the Sea Shrine. The Sea Shrine is located in Onrac and reached by use of the Submarine built by a local to save the Mermaids trapped within the Shrine when it sank beneath the Western Sea. The Light Warriors must first procure the Oxyale from the Fairy of the Spring in Gaia before they may enter the Submarine. Kraken later appears again as a boss in the Chaos Shrine. Tiamat, the Wind Fiend, is found in the Sky Castle which can only be entered using the transporter within the Mirage Tower in the Great Eastern Desert. The Mirage Tower cannot be entered without the Chime given to the Light Warriors by the Lefeinish (Lufenish). The transported will not operate without the Cube found within the Waterfall north of Onrac. Tiamat later appears again as a boss in the Chaos Shrine. Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990, lists Tiamat's HP as 1000. The first time the party battles it in the GBA version, its HP is listed as 2400. The second time the party battles it in the GBA version, its HP is listed as 5500.

Bikke

Bikke is a pirate who terrorized the port town of Pravoca. The Warriors of Light receive his ship when he is defeated.

Astos

Astos (アストス, Asutosu^?) is the king of the Dark Elves who steals Matoya's crystal to regain sight.

Other non-player characters

King of Cornelia

The King of Cornelia (Coneria) is the father of Sarah. The first person to verify the claims of the Warriors of Light to be the heroes of destiny, he has the bridge north of Cornelia fixed so they can continue their quest.

Princess Sarah

Princess Sarah (Sara in the original release) is a princess whom the Warriors of Light must rescue from Garland. Once she is rescued, she gives the heroes the Lute, which they will need later in their quest.

Matoya

Matoya is a witch who needs a crystal eye to see. She collects special herbs, and creates potions

Lukahn

Lukahn is the leader of the Circle of Sages, who prophesied the coming of the Warriors of Light.

Nerrick

Nerrick is a dwarf builder. He creates a canal with Nitro Powder.

Smyth

Smyth (Smith) is a dwarf blacksmith, who produces the Excalibur weapon for the Warriors of Light in exchange for Adamant.

Sadda

Sadda (Sarda in the original release) is a sage living in a cave near the Cavern of Earth. He gives the Warriors of Light the Earth Rod, so they can proceed further into the cave.

Dr. Unne

Dr. Unne is a professor studying the language of Lufenish (Lefeinish in the original release). He teaches the Warriors of Light the language after they give him the slab.

The Elf Prince

The Elf Prince was put into a deep sleep by Astos. When the Warriors of Light bring him a remedy from Matoya, he awakens, and gives the heroes the Mystic Key.

Queen Jayne

Queen Jayne is the mother of Princess Sara.

Koppe

Koppe (Kope in the original release) is a man residing in Onrac who witnessed a robot falling to Earth.

Underhill

A desert merchant, Underhill sells the Bottled Faerie to the Warriors of Light.

Arylon

Arylon is a dancer in Cornelia, who can tell the player where to go in early parts of the game. She was only named in the original NES release.
