In the spring of 1987 Michael disassociated himself from the congregation and stated he no longer wants to be known as a Jehovah's Witness, perhaps after being warned by congregation elders about the Thriller video and it reference to demon possession. Michael compromised and added a disclaimer to the video stating that it did not represent his beliefs about the supernatural nor is it meant to endorse spiritism. Jermaine Jackson has recently converted to Islam, and the other members of the family left as well, although most were never baptized as Witnesses.
