The members of each of the two major parties in the United States Senate (Democratic and Republican) elects Floor Leaders who lead that party's members in the upper house of the United States Congress. Thus, there is always a Democratic leader and a Republican leader in the Senate. The Senate of the United States of America is one of the two chambers of the Congress of the United States, the other being the House of Representatives.
Senators serve for six-year terms that are staggered so elections are held for approximately one-third of the seats (a "class") every second year.

The Majority leader customarily serves as the chief representative and "face" of his or her party in Senate, and sometimes even in all of Congress if the House of Representatives and thus office of Speaker of the House is controlled by the opposition party.
