New Mexico holds the distinction of being the state with the highest percentage of people who claim Hispanic ancestry, many of whom are descended from Spanish colonists. In 1609, Pedro de Peralta, a later governor of the Province of New Mexico , established the settlement of Santa Fe at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. According to the Census Bureau, as of 2003, the population of New Mexico was 1,874,614.
