Prior to 1996, PEI used 16 dual-member ridings. The boundaries for these ridings were drawn in 1893, a single change was made in 1966. It was determined in the courts that the variance of electors in these ridings was too great and was therefore unconstitutional.
Premier may dissolve the Legislature for a generalelection or by-elections may be required and called between generalelections to replace members who have died or resigned.
Elections P.E.I.'s mandate is to manage and oversee all aspects of the electoral process in PrinceEdwardIsland with fairness and impartiality.
Conduct provincial elections, by-elections, municipal and school trustee elections and plebiscites, promote public awareness of the electoral process, ensure eligible electors have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote, enforce compliance with provincial acts pertaining to elections, publish reports and recommend amendments to existing legislation.
