In 1980 Sweden adopted full cognatic primogeniture, meaning that the eldest descendants of the monarch, regardless of gender, takes precedence, with children taking precedence over grandchildren. Before that Sweden had had a male primogeniture, meaning that in all cases males would take precedence, but females would not be excluded entirely. See also: Order of succession

It was adopted by the Riksdag of the Estates on September 26, 1810 and it regulates the right of members of the House of Bernadotte to accede to the Swedish throne.

On the basis of his list, Eric XIV and Charles IX adopted their high ordinals; previous monarchs with those names are traditionally numbered counting backward from Eric XIV and Charles IX.
