In 1991, Volkswagen launched the third-generation Golf, garnering the European Car of the Year for 1992 (the previous two generations were nominated but lost to the Citroën CX in 1975 and the Fiat Uno in 1984).
The fifth generation Volkswagen Golf was launched in 2004, came runner-up to the Fiat Panda in the 2004 European Car of the Year, and has spawned several cousins: SEAT Toledo, Skoda Octavia and Audi A3 hatchback ranges as well as a new mini-MPV, the Seat Altea.
Volkswagen has a 29.9% stake in German truck manufacturer MAN AG, who recently in 2006 launched a takeover bid for the Swedish truck maker Scania, in which VW holds 20.3% of company and 35.31% of the voting stock.
