In 1541 Henry VIII declared the Kingdom of Ireland and embarked on the Tudor re-conquest of Ireland.
However, as part of the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, the position of Speaker of the House of Lords (as it is termed in the Act) was separated from the office of Lord Chancellor, though the Lords remain largely self-governing.
