Nepal’s principal rivers flow generally N to S and empty into the Ganges R. The three major streams crossing the country are the Karnali, Kosi, and Narayani rivers.
Nepal’s population was 18,491,097, according to a 1991 census; in 1994 the population was estimated at 19,525,000.
Nepal rendered valuable assistance to the British during the Sepoy Mutiny (1857–59) and during World War I. The British government reaffirmed the independence of Nepal by the terms of a treaty concluded in 1923.
