Total Fertility Rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (799 words)
The total fertility rate (TFR, also called fertility rate or total period fertility rate (TPFR)) of a population is the average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime if she were to experience the current age-specific fertility rates through her lifetime.
The TFR is therefore a measure of the fertility of an imaginary woman who passes through her reproductive life and is subject to all the age-specific fertility rates for ages 15-49 that were recorded for a given population in a given year.
A more accurate fertility measure is the Net Reproduction Rate (NRR) which measures the number of daughters a woman would have in her lifetime if she were subject to prevailing fertility rates in the given year, and also takes into account prevailing mortality rates in that year.

A leader of a low-growth rate country might be concerned with having enough workers to sustain a strong economy and support the nation's seniors; a leader of a high-growth rate country might be concerned with providing adequate services—such as education, health care, and jobs—for a large population.
Countries with relatively high population growth may have high fertility rates and high female illiteracy rates (as in the case of Chad).
Various factors influence birthrates and fertility rates, such as average levels of affluence and education, importance of children in the labor force, education and employment of women, infant mortality rates, cost of raising children, availability and reliability of birth control methods, and religious beliefs and cultural norms that influence personal decisions about family size.
