The following is a list of notable colleges and univeristies whose qualifications which may not be accepted by civil service or other employers. These institutions may have been listed on publically available lists of unaccredited institutions, or are absent from the UNESCO list of world universities [1] (http://www.unesco.org/iau/world-universities/). Some are suspected to be diploma mills; some of them are no longer in existence.
Unaccredited degrees may not be acceptable for state or federal civil service or other employment. In certain cases criminal penalties may apply should such a degree be presented in lieu of a degree from an accedited institution. Some schools have initiated law suits against Oregon for unconstitutional bias against some of these schools.
In some cases, the diplomamill may itself be guilty of an offence, if it knew or ought to have known that the qualifications it issues are used for fraudulent purposes.
Diplomamills could also be guilty of fraud if they mislead customers into believing that the qualifications they issue are accredited or recognised, or make false claims that they will lead to career advancement, and extort money on the basis of these claims.
Diplomamills are mainly found in jurisdictions which have not adopted tough laws to prohibit them, such as parts of the United States.
