The Brazilian Football League is highly regionalised because of the vast size of the country. The structure of the league has changed frequently from year to year as different configurations are experimented with. Now, the league has the same configuration of European leagues. Football is by far the most popular sport in Brazil and many of the world's best football players come from the country.


The list of Brazilian teams in football league is very vast (more than four hundred in Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF)'s official register). There follows a regionalised list of the noted teams in the Brazilian football league. Brazil had been inhabited for at least 10,000 years by semi-nomadic populations when the first Portuguese explorers, led by Pedro Álvares Cabral disembarked in 1500.
Brazil and its 26 states and Federal District are divided by IBGE into 5 distinctive regions: North, Northeast, Center-West, Southeast and South (Division by Regions).
Brazil is characterized by the extensive low-lying Amazon Rainforest in the north, and a more open terrain of hills and (low) mountains to the south, home to most of Brazil's population and its agricultural base.
