Arrests of journalists (692) went up by 40 per cent and twice as many journalists (1,420) were attacked or threatened.
Under authoritarian regimes, but also democratic ones, dozens of journalists were questioned, investigated, arrested or threatened for refusing to reveal their sources, especially in cases of terrorism.
Their reporting rules differ from RSF and by their criteria, they totalled 19 journalists killed in the line of duty during 2003 (Full CPJ list) and 13 more killed in suspicious circumstances, not necessarily connected to their work.
