Encyclopedia > List of local children's television series

The following is a (partial) list of local children's television series. Local children's television series were comprised of a heterogeneous set of programs aimed at the child audience, unique to individual broadcast markets. This type of programming began in the late 1940's and continued into the mid-late 1970's. This article is being considered for deletion in accordance with Wikipedias deletion policy. ...

The programs typically aired in the weekday mornings (before school) or afternoons (after school), as well as on weekends (to a lesser degree). There were several different formats to such children's programs. Almost all shows had a host, who assumed a stereotypical persona such as a cowboy/cowgirl, captain, princess, clown, sherriff, magician, or "uncle", whose role was to not only serve-up syndicated material (typically cartoons, although westerns were more popular earlier on), but also entertain the kids (often a live studio audience of kids) during breaks. Typical early program fare included cartoon favorites such as Crusader Rabbit, Popeye, Bugs Bunny, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Mighty Mouse, as well as movie shorts such as Our Gang/The Little Rascals and The Three Stooges. The popular hosts usually became local "celebrities" in the eyes of children and their parents, and were known to make public appearances at amusement parks and benefit fundraisers. Although most of the shows were unique to a given market, there were a few franchised shows, most notably, Romper Room and Bozo the Clown, which became extremely popular nationwide. Crusader Rabbit and his friend, Rags the Tiger Crusader Rabbit was the first animated series produced especially for television. ... A Popeye comic book cover shows Popeye, with his characteristic corncob pipe and single good eye, and his girlfriend Olive Oyl. ... Bugs Bunny is a fictional street-smart gray rabbit that appears in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons produced by Warner Bros. ... The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (also known as Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show) was a television animated series created and produced in the USA by Jay Ward. ... Mighty Mouse is an animated superhero mouse character created by the Terrytoons studio. ... A poster for the 1931 Our Gang comedy Love Business featuring depictions of (from left to right): Pete the Pup, Jackie Cooper, and Norman Chubby Chaney. ... The name The Little Rascals refers primarily to the television package of producer Hal Roachs Our Gang theatrical short film comedies, specifically those made between 1929 and 1938. ... The Three Stooges was an American comedy act in the 20th century. ... Romper Room was a childrens television series which ran in the United States from 1953 to 1994. ... Pinto Colvig, the original Bozo the Clown. ...

The eventual decline of the local children's television series market was attributable to a variety of causes, including parental concern over the effect of violence depicted in shows on their children and sponsor "brainwashing" of children via commercials. By the mid-late 1970's, local children's programming had all but disappeared from the airwaves.
