Boxfish generally are very personable fish yet are poorly suited for the home aquaria. They are not thought of as an ordinary aquarium tank mate, but are quickly gaining popularity. They do pose a hazard in the community tank however. They are capable of releasing a very powerful toxin which can kill other fish and in some cases, the boxfish itself. Dottybacks are hardy but often vary in their temperament, some are useful in the aquarium playing a role in the control of the numbers of bristleworms. Some like the Pseudochromis fridmani can make excellent fish for the reef community and are good for smaller aquaria whilst the Pseusdochromis pyrofeus is a little devil known for attacking and even killing fish much larger than they are.
