A film genre is a rough categorization of films into genres, which describe the typical subject matter—what the film is about: Western films are about the American West, love stories are about love, and so on. This is distinct from film styles, which describe filmic conventions which can be applied to any genre (see below). Of course, the more that genres are defined, the more likely that a filmmaker will try to combine, transcend and evade categories, so not every film can be neatly labeled. A "genre" generally refers to films that share similarities in the narrative elements from which they are constructed.
Many historians debate whether film noir truly is a genre rather than a style of film-making often emulated in the period's heyday.
As such, film genres are also useful in areas of marketing, criticism and consumption.

By the end of the silent era, many of the main genres were established: the melodrama, the western, the horror film, comedies, and action-adventure films (from swashbucklers to war movies).
War films are often paired with other genres, such as action, adventure, drama, romance, comedy (fl), suspense, and even epics and westerns, and they often take a denunciatory approach toward warfare.
All films have at least one major genre, although there are a number of films that are considered crossbreeds or hybrids with three or four overlapping genre (or sub-genre) types that identify them.
