Currently Lithuania is divided into 10 counties. Those 10 counties are divided into 60 municipalities. • District - there are 43 district municipalities that roughly correspond to districts that existed under the Soviet rule.
• City - there are 8 city municipalities. Those cities are either big (like Vilnius or Kaunas) or otherwise substantially different from other cities (e.g. majority of inhabittants of Visaginas are Russians). Palanga city municipality is called this way, despite of actually including a collection of small towns rather than a single city.
• Municipalities created in 2000 by "Municipalities Reform Act" and former city municipalities, expanded by this act to also include some surrounding regions, also Neringa municipality which was known as Neringa city municipality previously but renamed in 2000 as it has no city in it's limits actually, only villages. There are 9 those municipalities. They do not contain either "city" or "district" in their name.
