Encyclopedia > List of national parks of the Republic of China

The National Park Act of the Republic of China was passed in 1972 to protect the nature, wildlife, and history. There are six national parks in ROC:

  • Kenting National Park, the oldest; the southern most, with tropical coral reef and migratory birds.
  • Yushan National Park, the largest; on central Taiwan, Jade Mountain is the highest peak of East Asia.
  • Yangmingshan National Park, the smallest on Taiwan; has a volcanic landform; the northernmost
  • Taroko National Park: marble gorge, east Taiwan
  • Shei-Pa National Park: has diminishing fish brook masu salmon (Oncorhychus masou formosanum); on central north in Hsinchu County & Miaoli County.
  • Kinmen National Park: historical battle-fields; only one not on Taiwan

The total area of these six national parks is more than 2,394,070 km˛ (about 227,336 acres), approximately 8.43 percent of Taiwan's total area.
