County Roads in Indiana

Most Indiana counties use a unique numbering system for designating county roads based on a grid (similar to how streets are designated in Salt Lake City. The system is similar to latitude and longitude on the globe, where numbering begins at the Equator and Greenwich Prime Meridian, respectively (Perhaps it's no coincidence that the major north-south street in Indianapolis is Meridian Street, which likewise, is the division line between "east" and "west" in the city.) The Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Salt Lake Citys top tourist draw. ... Latitude, usually denoted symbolically by the Greek letter phi, , gives the location of a place on Earth north or south of the equator. ... Longitude, sometimes denoted by the Greek letter λ (lambda),[1][2] describes the location of a place on Earth east or west of a north-south line called the Prime Meridian. ... World map showing the equator in red In tourist areas, the equator is often marked on the sides of roads The equator marked as it crosses Ilhéu das Rolas, in São Tomé and Príncipe. ... Location of the Prime Meridian Prime Meridian in Greenwich The Prime Meridian, also known as the International Meridian or Greenwich Meridian, is the meridian (line of longitude) passing through the Royal Greenwich Observatory, Greenwich, England — it is the meridian at which longitude is 0 degrees. ... The Indianapolis skyline Indianapolis is the capital of the U.S. state of Indiana. ...

A road's number is the distance (in miles), from the division line, multiplied by 100, with the compass direction from the division line following the number. For example, "200 E" would be a north-south road located 2 miles EAST of the division line. "350 N" would be an east-west road located 3.5 miles NORTH of the division line.

Names are used for roads that do not follow a straight north-south or east-west alignment.
