Encyclopedia > List of peaks by prominence

This is a list of mountains ordered by their topographic prominence. For other uses, see Mountain (disambiguation). ... In topography, prominence, also known as autonomous height, relative height or shoulder drop (in America) or prime factor (in Europe), is a concept used in the categorization of hills and mountains, also known as peaks. ...

Note: artificial saddle points, such as the Panama and Suez canals, are not taken into account. The prominences and parents of Denali and Kilimanjaro remain as they were before these canals were constructed, although not all researchers agree with this practice. For other uses, see Suez (disambiguation). ...

Parent peak

There are different definitions of the parent of a peak. Where a single parent is listed, the different definitions agree; where two are given, the prominence parent is marked "1", and the island parent "²".

In the parent column, the prominence parent of peak A can be found by dividing the island or region in question into territories, by tracing the runoff from the key col of every peak that is higher than peak A. The parent is the peak whose territory peak A resides in.

The encirclement parent is found by tracing the contour below peak A's key col and picking the highest mountain in that region. This is easier to calculate; however, it tends to break down for peaks with very low cols, such as Jabal Shams (number 110 in the list).

In the Parent column, HP stands for 'highest point on'.

The 125 most prominent

Of the 125 peaks listed in this section, China has the most, 16. Close behind it are Indonesia, with 13, and the United States with 12.

Rhinoclimbs: Trip Reports (2113 words)
The prominence of a peak can be thought of as the peak's elevation above sea level, when it first becomes the highest point on its own “island” as water rises.
For example, a 7000+ foot contour peak remains 7000 feet and the 6000+ pass would be figured at 6000' + 40' = 6040' (the lowest contour that encircles the peak and no higher summit), for a Prominence of 960 feet.
For example, a 7000+ foot contour peak could be as high as 7039 feet on a 40-foot contour map, and the 6000+-foot pass could be as low as 6000 feet, so the best prominence possible is 1039 feet.
