Alphabetizing these names
This alphabetical list is subject to complications that reflect the variations in naming conventions, especially among names that come from many cultures and historical periods.
Letters that closely resemble one of the 26 letters of the English alphabet (such as Ä) are treated for purposes of order as if they were the English letter they resemble (in this case A); the letters ð and þ are each treated as if it were the pair of letters "th".
Names that contain a letter not appearing in English (such as Ä), and are frequently transliterated with two letters replacing the foreign letter, may appear in this list either spelled with the foreign letter, spelled with the two English letters, or appear twice, once with each of those spellings. Generally the positions the two spellings of such a name would fall at in this list, according to the principles stated, are widely separated: for instance, if Gödel and Goedel both appeared, they would be separated by Godet, Godfrey and Goedeke.
The list was originally compiled in 1967/68 in collaboration with a number of agencies and the Library of Congress MARC Pilot Project participants.
Any variant names of the place or names of places assigned to use that code are listed on successive lines, with the first such name preceded by the symbol UF (used for).
These UF names may represent alternate names of the place, older names of the place, names representing component or subjurisdictional parts of the place, or names of places formerly assigned a separate code.
This is a partial list of places in London, England.
Aside from the City and the London boroughs themselves, all contemporary districts of London are informal designations; usually based or adapted from historic parish or metropolitan borough boundaries which were all abolished by 1965.
All London boroughs are divided into wards which often share the names of London districts, however, they rarely share the historic or commonly accepted contemporary boundaries of those places.
