The Black Forest (or Schwarzwald) in southwest Germany is famed for its majestic scenery, delicious Black Forest Cake, and cuckoo clocks; for generations, its dense woodlands have inspired ghost stories and fairy tales.
It is the only city in Germany with an explicit tax on prostitution, and is home to the biggest brothel in Europe, "Pascha," which is 12 stories tall and boasts 120 rooms.
In spite of the damage done by the war and the communist rule that followed, Dresden is now embarking on an ambitious restoration and renewal project for the city's 800th anniversary in 2006.
