A music genre is a category (or genre) of pieces of music that share a certain style or "basic musical language" (van der Merwe 1989, p.3).
Melodic music is a term that covers various genres of non-classical music which are primarily characterised by the dominance of a single strong melody line.
Melodic music is found in all parts of the world, overlapping many genres, and may be performed by a singer or orchestra, or a combination of the two.

James Tenney is another composer who is concerned with process, such as in his tribute to Steve Reich, Chromatic Canon, in which a tone row is eventually built up and, one note at a time, from what started as a repeated open fifth, before returning by the same path.
Michael Nyman has described how the generally minimalistic tonal music associated with process music arose from the influence of and reaction against process-based music of extreme determinism or indeterminism using serial, aleatoric, and stochastic methods.
