East Berlin, Germany

In the Soviet Union, every city had several monuments of Vladimir Lenin. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many statues of Vladimir Lenin were torn down. Vladimir I. Lenin: Biography and Much More from Answers.com (6937 words)
Lenin was in Switzerland during the early years of World War I. In his view the war was an imperialist struggle; since imperialism was “the final stage of capitalism,” it was a historical necessity that the war would offer opportunities for a revolution of the proletariat.
Lenin concluded that Russia was now ripe for a socialist revolution, arguing that the moderate provisional government represented the bourgeoisie whereas the soviets represented, in his words, a revolutionary democratic dictatorship of the proletariat and peasantry.
Lenin is also accredited with translating the Communist Manifesto into Russian in the period between being expelled from the University and obtaining his license to practice law.
Statue at AllExperts (364 words)
Zurab Tsereteli's statue of Peter the Great in downtown Moscow is one of the world's tallest, alongside Ushiku Amida Buddha in Japan and the Rodina Mat on the Mamayev Kurgan.
Many statues are built on commission to commemorate a historical event, such as the Battle of Iwo Jima, or the life of an influential person, such as Mahatma Gandhi.
In 1986, when the Statue of Liberty marked her one-hundredth anniversary, a three-day centennial celebration in her honor attracted 12 million, said to have been the largest public event in the world as of that date.
