In 2004, a new strategic route system was put in place where most of the existing routes were renumbered and exits to key places or to another route were numbered, (for example, if you wanted to go from Yau Ma Tei to the airport, you would need to travel on route 3, take exit 5 to join route 8 to complete the journey to the airport, hence it would be known as "3-5-8"). Routes 1-3 are cross-harbour north-south routes following the order in which the harbour tunnels were opened. Routes 4, 5, 7 and 8 are east-west routes and have sequences from south to north. Route 9 is a circular route that circumscribes the New Territories.
