Cautionary notes

  1. This list is incomplete, especially outside its upper reaches.
  2. There are some very large state owned businesses with turnover of over $1 billion, for example state oil companies in OPEC countries and these are excluded.
  3. The availability of up to date information on private companies is limited and varies from country to country.
  4. Revenue is only one measure of company size and is not the most appropriate for all purposes. Using another measure such as total assets or market capitalisation would produce fundamentally different lists.
  5. Many major companies, especially outside the U.S., do not have a 31 December year end, so they figures are for years to a variety of dates.
  6. This list is shown in U.S. dollars, but many of the companies on it prepare their accounts in other currencies. The value of their turnover in dollar terms may change substantially in a short period of time due to currency fluctuations.
  7. Figures are either latest full year results or annualised to the most recent quarter; the year these results were reported in is shown beside them.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is made up of Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela; since 1965, its international headquarters have been in Vienna, Austria. ...
