The Los Angeles--Riverside--Orange County, CA CMSA was a defined Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area between June, 1993 and June, 2003. Prior to June, 1993 this area had been defined as the Los Angeles-Anaheim-Riverside, CA CMSA. After June, 2003 it was divided into different statistical areas. It was defined as:

LosAngeles is the home of the LosAngeles Dodgers baseball team, the LosAngeles Lakers and LosAngeles Clippers men's basketball teams, the LosAngeles Sparks women's basketball team, the LosAngeles Kings NHL team, the Club Deportivo Chivas USA and LosAngeles Galaxy soccer teams, and the LosAngeles Avengers arena football team.
As of 2005, the official estimate of the population of the GreaterLosAngelesarea is 17,545,623.
LosAngeles became a real city as automobiles began to be mass-produced, and as a result it developed somewhat less densely.
For example, Downtown LosAngeles is the area of LosAngeles roughly enclosed by three freeways and one river: the Harbor Freeway to the west, the Hollywood Freeway to the north, the LosAngeles River to the east, and the Santa Monica Freeway to the south.
