Canada was federated in 1867. Since then it has grown from 4 original provinces, to 10 provinces, and 3 territories. Canada has been a democracy since its inception, and there have been over 300 general elections, listed below:

Elections are generally held in either the fall or spring.
By-elections can be held between general elections when seats become vacant.
The most recent instance of this was the 1988 election, which was considered by most parties to be a referendum on free trade with the United States.

In the last general election, some returning officers lightened their workload by hiring data processing firms to prepare the list of electors and the enumeration notices for the second stage of the process.
Conceivably, Elections Canada may find itself in the same position it was in before the November 1988 general election: again faced with training two sets of returning officers; planning two different sets of electoral districts; and converting two sets of laws into the necessary detailed instructions.
Elections Canada has been meeting with election officials from the 10 provinces and two territories on an annual basis for the past 15 years to explore areas of mutual interest and cooperation within the constraints of our respective legislation.
