Little Falls is a city located in Herkimer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,188. The name is derived from a small cataract near the city.


The City of Little Falls is located at the eastern end of the Town of Little Falls.

History

Little Falls was settled in the 18th Century and was incorporated as a village in 1811. The City of Little Falls was incorporated in 1895.


Geography

Little Falls is on the north bank of the Mohawk River near a waterfall which was considered smaller than another waterfall on the river by Cohoes, New York.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²). 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.29% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,188 people, 2,339 households, and 1,277 families residing in the city. The population density is 527.1/km² (1,367.0/mi²). There are 2,646 housing units at an average density of 268.8/km² (697.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.78% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,339 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.4% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.4% are non-families. 39.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.86.


In the city the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $23,965, and the median income for a family is $34,583. Males have a median income of $28,807 versus $21,040 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,139. 16.6% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
