It houses the only museum about Lithuania in America (the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture), which has a huge wealth of knowledge on Lithuania and Lithuanian culture. It has a number of Lithuanian restaurants, bookstores, and other shops. Even the current President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, was a former resident of the Chicago area. Chicago is also the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania, and still has close ties to what is still affectionately called the Motherland.
