IMDb profile

Little Man Tate is a 1991 motion picture which tells the story of Fred Tate, a 7-year-old child prodigy who struggles to self-actualize in a social and psychological construct that largely fails to accommodate his intelligence. Jodie Foster (who also directed) plays Fred’s mother Dede, who attempts to give her son a “normal” childhood while simultaneously feeding his intellectual curiosity. The film marked Foster’s directorial debut. Large portions of the film were shot at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio. The movie grossed about $25 million.[1] Image File history File links Size of this preview: 392 × 599 pixels Full resolution (464 × 709 pixel, file size: 103 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg) Fair use in Little Man Tate: This image illustrates the text next to which it appears, which describes the film in question for which it... Little Man Tate - Florida's young murderer and the insanity of our competency laws. By Dahlia Lithwick (952 words)
The discussion around the Tate case has largely addressed the issue of prosecutorial bloodthirstiness and the decision to try him as an adult in criminal court, a decision that forced some tearful members of his jury to impose a mandatory life sentence.
Lionel Tate, whose IQ was tested at 90 at the time of trial and whose "social maturity" was evaluated as that of a 6-year-old, spent much of his time in the courtroom drawing pictures at counsel table.
Moreover, said the court, it was wrong for the trial judge to assume that Tate, with the mental age of an 8- or 9-year-old, could possibly understand the strategic and constitutional decisions necessary to help his attorney defend against a first-degree murder charge.
