Livingstone also Maramba is a town and provincial capital in Zambia, located about 10 km from Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. Its population is 97,000 (2002, www.citypopulation.de). The city sprang up after the Victoria Falls Bridge was constructed in 1904, and was named in honour of David Livingstone, the first European to explore the region. In 1911 Livingstone became the capital of the British colony of Northern Rhodesia, succeeding Kalomo, until the seat of government was finally moved to Lusaka in 1935. The Victoria Falls Bridge spans the Zambezi downstream from the waterfall and provides one of the chief border crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
