History

The mall opened October 29, 1964[3] with Sears, Kresge, and Crowley's as anchor stores.[1] A movie theater was added a year later, and Children's Palace was eventually added as well[1]. Kmart closed all of its Kresge operations in 1987 with the demise of the chain. A Mervyn's store was added in 1989. Crowley's was converted to Value City in March 2000. Mervyn's closed in 2006[4] and is currently vacant. Possible re-development

Livonia Mall has not been remodeled since it first opened, and sections of it looked very dated.[1] Although the mall is 42 percent occupied, most of its tenants are independent, local shops. Because of the mall's condition, plans were made to convert the center to a strip mall in 2006. These plans have stalled, however, as the mall could not strike a deal with the Sears anchor; as of 2007, Livonia Mall is still open as an enclosed mall. Example of a small strip mall. A strip mall (also called a plaza) is a shopping center where the stores are arranged in a row, with a sidewalk in front. ...
