Lloyd Cole: Music in a Foreign Language - PopMatters Music Review (730 words)
In 1984, Lloyd Cole came seemingly out of nowhere to release what turned out to be the most fully realized and endlessly satisfying folk-rock record of the decade in Rattlesnakes, and he has spent the rest of his career trying to live up to its promise.
Cole seemed especially adrift in the '90s, experimenting with a variety of sounds and styles but never quite finding the formula to cash in on the alternative-music bubble, a flash in time that might have been his moment.
Cole restricts his voice to the reedy range he can handle and he makes no flights of simulated passion, but he often sounds as though he could benefit from a little Afrin to decongest himself.
Lloyd Cole - Biography - AOL Music (482 words)
Born January 31, 1961, in Buxton, England, Cole formed the Commotions in 1982 while studying philosophy at the University of Glasgow.
Following the release of 1987's Mainstream, Cole disbanded the Commotions and moved to New York City to establish himself as a solo performer.
Cole resurfaced in 2004 with the understated Music in a Foreign Language LP.
