Colonel Loammi Baldwin was an American politician, noted engineer, surveyor and a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Baldwin surveyed and was responsible for the construction of the Middlesex Canal, and served on the design committee for the Bunker Hill Monument. Today he is perhaps best remembered for the Baldwin apple which he developed at his farm. The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), also known as the American War of Independence, was a war fought primarily between Great Britain and revolutionaries within thirteen North American colonies. ... After attending grammar school in Woburn, Massachusetts, Baldwin enlisted in a regiment in 1774, at the age of thirty. He, as a major, commanded the Woburn militia at the battle of Lexington and Concord. He fought under George Washington at the Battle of Trenton. In 1777, Baldwin resigned from the army because of ill health. He was subsequently elected to various public offices between 1780 and 1796.
