The Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 (1994 c. 19) created the current local government structure of 22 unitary authorities, and abolished the previous two-tier structure of administrative counties and districts. Wales is located in the south-west of Great Britain and is bordered by the English counties of Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire to the east, the Bristol Channel to the south, St George's Channel to the southwest, and the Irish Sea to the west and north.
Wales was legally annexed by the Laws in WalesAct 1535, in the reign of Henry VIII of England.
The population of Wales in the 2001 census was 2,903,085.
Wales is bounded on the north by the Irish Sea; on the east by the English counties of Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Gloucestershire; on the south by the Bristol Channel; and on the west by the St George’s Channel and Cardigan Bay.
The university is composed of the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth; the University College of North Wales in Bangor; University of Wales College of Cardiff; St David’s University College in Lampeter; the University College of Swansea; and the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff.
The 8 county councils and 37 district councils were replaced by 22 unitary localgovernment authorities divided equally between counties (11) and county boroughs (11); the population of the latter type tends to be mainly urban.
